A Moody Basement Speakeasy, a Hidden Door, and a High-Energy “Ninja Room”
At Compelling Homes, our clients aren’t looking for simple, formulaic remodels. Instead, they come to us for bold and innovative ideas. That’s on full display in this custom basement, which turned our client’s ambitious vision into a stunning outcome.
For this project, the goal was to create a strategic fusion between a sophisticated lounge environment and an active, high-energy zone. We achieved this through deliberate compartmentalization, allowing a single floor plan to host both quiet elegance and playful chaos without compromising the integrity of either environment.
The Speakeasy Zone
"A sultry, jazzy, and intimate atmosphere designed for quiet sophistication."

The majority of this basement space is dedicated to the speakeasy zone, which exudes an upscale, dark, and refined aesthetic.
This zone itself is made up of several distinct spaces. There’s the luxe bar itself, which has leather club chairs, natural stone countertops, champagne bronze fixtures, modern pendant fixtures with warm lighting, and a green, jewel-toned backsplash. It’s a space where Sinatra himself would be happy to take a seat and sip on a perfectly prepared martini.
The dark cabinetry includes internal lighting to show off premium bottles, but the cabinets themselves are safely locked so that only adults have access.

Across from the bar is an inviting sitting space with a 60-inch bioethanol fireplace, plush chairs, and a wall-mounted TV if you decide to put down your book and turn on the game. The entire space features classic herringbone flooring and thoughtfully placed accent lighting.

Adjacent to the main part of the speakeasy is the home theater. It features the same atmosphere but adds modular stadium seating and a 100-inch projection screen with 7.1 Dolby Atmos audio. Whether it’s art house cinema, an action blockbuster, or the Super Bowl, this is the ideal spot to kick back and enjoy.

The Secret Pivot
“Now you see it, now you don’t.”
While this homeowner loved the idea of a space dedicated to sophisticated style, they also wanted their children to benefit from having a custom finished basement. So how do you have your cake and eat it, too?
The answer is the secret pivot. A concealed wainscoting door acts as an architectural boundary, separating adult sophistication from playful chaos.
Cracking the door, you get a glimpse of the contrast.

And once the door opens wide, a combination bedroom and dynamic playroom reveals itself.

The Ninja Room
“Yes, you can play on the furniture.”
The ninja room is a high-energy children's activity zone designed for physical play and exploration.
An adjustable rock climbing wall and overhead monkey bars provide endless opportunities to stay active, even on the coldest or rainiest of days. And bunk beds and hammock anchor points make it perfect for sleepovers, too.

A Refined and Functional Basement Bath
“High-end finishes for every space.”
Of course, no one wants to leave this basement just to use the restroom. So we installed a three-quarter bath that reflects the style of the rest of the basement. A white walk-in shower provides a pop of contrast with dark paint on the walls. A tile niche and robe hooks add essential convenience to this modern and functional bathroom that rounds out the overall design of the finished basement.
